Cold Lake Air Weapons Range Settlement

Background

The Leadership of Birch Narrows Dene Nation and Buffalo River Dene Nation have been working on a claim with the Crown to seek damages from the loss of access to the Air Weapons Range. This land was traditional territory for the peoples of Birch Narrows and Buffalo River and holds significant spiritual, cultural, and economic significance. The claim is reaching a settlement in the near future.

The settlement will be in the range of $20 million and a financial plan is being developed to ensure a lasting impact on the peoples of Birch Narrows Dene Nation.

The Community Comprehensive Plan, Strategic Plan, and Development Plan all show many goals and needs in the Community. Leadership has reviewed and compiled a number of options for the financial settlement plan that works to help accomplish the long-term goals of Birch Narrows Dene Nation.

The settlement belongs to the Nation as a whole and it is important that it benefits the community as a whole both now and in the future for both current and future generations.

Trust Information

The goal of the settlement is to ensure lasting impacts to the community now and for future generations. Placing a portion of the settlement into a trust is a wise and beneficial approach. Trusts generate income through investment and disburse money each year.
